David Pierce, co-author of the book King of Jazz, introduces the film and signs books after the screening. Whiteman biographer Don Rayno also appears.

(1930) Directed by John Murray Anderson. Paul Whiteman, John Boles, Laura La Plante. (98 min.) DCP.

This scintillating two-strip Technicolor restoration of a landmark cinematic musical revue is seen in its dazzling original form for the first time in 87 years. Directed by a master of 1920s stage musicals and hosted by one of the most popular band leaders of the Roaring Twenties, it includes the dancers who were renamed the Rockettes, 26-year-old Bing Crosby, a cartoon by Woody Woodpecker creator Walter Lanz, and great jazzbos like Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang.

Jazz historian Gary Giddens calls it “a Rosetta Stone of early American pop.”
