An evening with Merge Records featuring Superchunk, Waxahatchee and Ex Hex

* Presented with Cat's Cradle
* Doors open at 6 pm

Besides being rich in musical talent, North Carolina is also home to some of the country’s most influential independent record companies. This concert highlights three bands affiliated with Durham-based indie-rock champion Merge Records. The label was formed in 1989 by Laura Ballance and Mac McCaughan of the band Superchunk.

“No band was more emblematic of the true spirit of American indie rock during the 1990s than Superchunk, the pride of Chapel Hill, North Carolina,” says All Music. The band released its first album in 1990 and has been recording and performing great new music ever since. Superchunk’s latest album I Hate Music (2013) shows “how a band can grow up gracefully without sacrificing the energy and feeling that youth brings, while also adding some wisdom and emotional heft at the same time.”

Waxahatchee, named for a creek not far from her childhood home in Alabama, is the solo musical project of Katie Crutchfield. Pitchfork says of her most recent release on Merge, Ivy Tripp, “It's exciting to hear a young voice rising so assuredly above the fray, one you can imagine inspiring kids years from now, and inspiring them to pick up guitars and sing and take control of their direction, too.” Her fourth album, Out of the Storm, becomes available on July 14.

Ex Hex is Mary Timony, Laura Harris, and Betsy Wright, a power trio (drums, bass, searing leads) from Washington, D.C. Timony is known as part of Wild Flag, a bicoastal quartet that featured former Sleater-Kinney members Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss. Ex Hex released its debut album Rips on Merge in 2014, “a collection of perfectly lean power-pop tunes that evoke Tom Petty and the Runaways while conjuring the unruly energy of contemporary mid-fi bashers like Thee Oh Sees” (Pitchfork).
