Kubo and the Two Strings
(2016) Directed by Travis Knight. Charlize Theron, Art Parkinson, Matthew McConaughey. (101 min.) PG
Plucky Kubo lives with his mother in an isolated seaside cave, sheltered from the wrath of his grandfather, the evil Moon King. Discovered by his wicked aunts, he embarks on an adventure to seek his father’s magical armor and defeat his vengeful family. This spooky Japanese fairy tale, suitable for older kids, is miraculously crafted of origami-inspired stop-motion animation.
“Kubo offers visceral thrills and visual splendor, but it also champions the importance of kindness, forgiveness, and embracing humanity’s many imperfections” (The Atlantic).
Some scenes may be too mature or frightening for young children.
