Oscar’s Best Picture depicts a rough Miami ‘hood, where Chiron struggles with his blossoming gay identity. During three chapters, child, teen, and man, and played by three different actors, he learns how to survive his drug-addicted mother, his fraught schooling, and the challenge of defining masculinity in his community. The photography is dazzling and the music original.
“Moonlight is both a disarmingly, at times almost unbearably personal film and an urgent social document, a hard look at American reality and a poem written in light, music and vivid human faces” (New York Times).
