Washington State Wine Tasting with Andy McDowell of Mutual Distributing
Friday, January 12th
Pacific Rim Chenin Blanc $11.99
The Le Craie Vouvray was a huge hit at our tasting a couple weeks ago, so we've picked another delicious Chenin Blanc from Washington for this week's tasting. No malo, no oak, no lees ageing, just pure, old vine Chenin Blanc fruit from the Hahn Hill Vineyard planted in 1968. Nice and fruity with a dash of residual sugar, it's still vibrant and refreshing. Flavors and aromas of white peach, key lime and honeydew melon.
Charles & Charles Chardonnay $13.99
A deliciously full bodied, but not overdone Chardonnay from the 2 Charles' that would cost $20 if it came from California. Aromas of Pippin apples, jasmine and citrus flowing in to caramel and honeysuckle. The tropical fruit notes are elevated by nice minerality and acidity, power & finesse in the same glass.
Tamarack Cellars Firehouse Red $17.99
This gorgeous red blend is an «ideal Taylor's customer red wine» and we predict this will become one of our best selling reds this winter. There's a little bit of everything in here (Merlot, Cab Sauv, Syrah, Cab Fran, Sangiovese, Malbec, Petit Verdo, Mourvedre, Grenache, Counoise) aged in a blend of old and new French, American and Eastern European oak. Deceptively sweet aromas of strawberries, raspberries and rose petals. The flavors are dark, rich, lusciously mouthwatering, with cherries, boysenberries, tart plum skins, hints of leather, sweet pipe tobacco, and coffee beans. The tannins are firm, but not a bit edgy and the finish lingers with just a touch of anise.
Sparkman Cellars Wilderness Red Sugg: $24.99, Taylor's: $19.99
Another «kitchen sink» red blend that really showcases the winemaker's art of blending. Sparkman blends 62% Syrah, 14% Tempranillo, 11% Grenache, 7% Petite Sirah, 5% Souzāo and 1%Touriga Naçional from some of Washington's most famous vineyards to surprising heights for such a reasonably price offering (one of his best and cheapest). Beautiful aromas of plum, blueberry and raspberry with cherry blossom and peach skin. Chocolate-covered pomegranate and sweet blueberry flavors strike a terrific balance that's capped by a spoonful of cherry pie filling. In 2007, the Sparkmans began donating a portion of this wine's sales to The Wilderness Society.
Nelms Road Cabernet Sauvignon
Sugg: $27.99, Taylor's: $22.99
Nelms Road is the second label of Woodward Canyon, one of Washington's most respected and awarded wineries. Herb, black currant, blackberry and vanilla aromas followed by sweet plump dark cherry and coffee flavors with a squeeze of tannins.
