Spring is in the air, and art is on the walls! April Third Friday will be in full bloom at the Durham Arts Council on Friday, April 20, starting at 6pm. Make Durham Arts Council the first stop on your monthly art walk — marvel at new exhibits, take in some live music, sample refreshments, and try your hand at a family friendly craft.
Large scale portraiture from painter William Paul Thomas will wow you in «Us & Them,» on view in the (downstairs) Allenton Gallery. William’s exhibit presents disembodied heads of people in his social circle, set against minimalist backgrounds, and sometimes employing text elements. The work begins as an intimate acknowledgement of an individual and is subsequently transformed into a set of symbols poised for the viewer’s investigation.
“The Marriage of Paint and Collage,” in the (upstairs) Semans Gallery, features vibrant works of mixed media from Bernice Koff. The exhibit highlights Bernice’s Book Jacket Series – the series reflects her education as a college English major, her passion for reading, and her personal style as a collage artist. The works begin with the selection of a book cover that the artist has a strong connection to: the Art World, Oriental and European Motifs, Gardens, Literature and Books. Personal souvenirs, photos, and collage papers are combined with drawn and painted areas to create abstract works that are inspired by the original book cover, parts of which are revealed and parts hidden in the final painting.
The The Durham Art Guild will be hosting their annual 2018 Members' Showcase in the (downstairs) SunTrust Gallery. Stop in and view a diverse range of recent work from the many talented DAG members!
See you at the DAC!
